Somali Cat Breed Information

Somali cats are often described as long -haired Abyssinian cats. This is because many make the claim that this breed originated in Somalia, and it is a relative of an Abyssinian cat from Ethiopia that has long disappeared.

History

Somali cat is basically a long -haired version of the Abyssinian cat. According to history the Abyssinian cat was bred in Great Britain from a cat brought to the country by Lord Robert Napier with the British army to Abyssinia. There he bought a cat which was later brought to Britain. The cat was named Zulu and if you follow the facts, this little one is the ancestor of the charming breed today known as the Abyssinian cat and it is also the ancestor of the Somali cat.

The unique pattern on the Abyssinian fur reminds Lord Robert Napier of the camouflage pattern on the coat of wild rabbit fur. To perpetuate this, Zulu is bred with a domestic cat breed that has the same appearance as a fur coat. His efforts were finally successful and the Abyssinian breed was successfully produced.

Born kittens have fur like Abyssinian cats but long fur. Since long fur is not a trait desired by Abyssinians, these long -haired kittens are altered and placed as pets. However, many breeders love the long fur appearance of these Abyssinian cats. In the 1960s, a breeder managed to create a long-haired Abyssinian version and called it Somali. The beautiful fur coat on the Somali breed is similar to that of an Abyssinian cat. Due to its stunning attitude, temperament and appearance, the reputation of the Somali breed rose rapidly to become famous.
