The Lykoi, sometimes known as the “werewolf cat” for obvious reasons, is one of the most intriguingly horror-like cat breeds. It’s also one of the most recent, having debuted around 20 years ago. What began as a genetic mutation has evolved into a sought-after appearance, enthralling people with its distinctive cryptozoological charm.
Because of its werewolf-like look, the Lykoi cat breed is also known as the Werewolf cat. This is due to a naturally occurring gene prevalent in the feral cat population. Patti Thomas, Brittney Gobble, and Johnny Gobble founded the Lykoi breed in 2011.
Because two unrelated litters produced some strange kittens, the Gobbles thoroughly examined their health to ensure that their strange look was not caused by a sickness or illness. Johnny Gobble had two unrelated cats breed in order to verify that the appearance was genuinely due to a gene, and they created the very first Lykoi that was purposely bred.
Finally, it was established that this gene was recessive, therefore outcrossing with black domestic cats was continued to reduce inbreeding, especially since the mother of one of the litters was a black Domestic Shorthair.
The Lykoi is a mostly hairless breed of cat with a distinct color. The hair coat is made up of amelanistic and solid black hair. The color of the hair can range from practically black to near white. The more white hair in the coat, the silverer they will appear.
In other animals, the coat pattern is known as roan, however the Lykoi is the only recognized cat breed with this pattern. The degree of partial hairlessness might also vary. They can range from nearly hairless to nearly hairy, and they will molt most of their coat at least once. They will always be hairless around the eyes, chin, nose, muzzle, and back of the ears.
The ears and nose will also have a leathery feel to them. The hairless face gives the well-known and beloved werewolf appearance. Almost always, they will have scanty hair on their legs and feet. The skin of the Lykoi is pink, but it can deepen to black in a matter of days if exposed to sunshine or heat. If there isn’t enough sunlight, their skin will turn pink.
They are a medium-sized cat, with males being significantly larger than females. The ears are long and pointed, with a broad base. Their physique is slender rather than muscular. They have tails that are shorter than their bodies and medium-sized legs. Their characteristics give them the appearance of wolves. They are born completely black, and the hairlessness and roan color pattern appear after one to two weeks. Despite the two different colors in their coats, they are shown as solid black cats in the traditional division.

The Lykoi is a particularly smart cat. They are excellent problem solvers, which is evident when they play. They enjoy being around people, but can also be content playing alone with any toy or object in the room. When there are multiple Lykoi, they interact quite well. The breed can appear to have dog-like characteristics since they will fetch, hunt, and chase like wolves on the hunt.
The Lykoi enjoys a warm lap, but prefers to spend their time actively playing and hunting with their boundless energy. They, like other cats, enjoy and seek the sun. They are possessive of their people and their toys, yet they will share if requested. They are initially wary of any new pet or person. They want to make sure they aren’t a danger to themselves or the house.
The Lykoi cats still have nearly zero inbreeding. They have shown to be a tough, healthy breed that will give other cats a run for their money in the show ring.
