Khao Manee

Developed centuries ago in Siam (now Thailand), the Khao Manee was solely owned by royalty for hundreds of years. They are referred to as the Khao Port or “all white” in the Thai collection of cat poems, the Tamra Maew. The name is roughly translates to “White Gem,” and they are also known as the Diamond Eye cat.

This breed was fiercely protected against export until 1999, when the first one was brought to the United States by Colleen Freymuth, who initiated a breeding program to preserve these rare animals, whose numbers are declining in their native home.

The breed has yet to be recognized by any cat registries in the United States, and Khao Manee are still relatively rare, despite being permitted for exhibition. In October 2011, the Khao Manee Cat Club was granted pre-affiliation status by the Cat Fancy’s Governing Council. This is not a bred or planned breed; it is indigenous to Thailand.

Health Treatment

The Khao Manee have undergone a rigorous and respected breeding procedure, and they are usually regarded as a hardy breed. However, it is critical to check their skin on a regular basis, particularly the area above their ears, because all white cats are prone to acquiring skin cancer, especially if they enjoy to lie in the sun. Some breeds of pure white cats tend to be prone to deafness in one or both ears.
