Arabica (Coffea arabica)
Arabica beans are by far the most popular type of coffee bean, accounting for over 60% of the world’s coffee production. These delectable beans originated many centuries ago in Ethiopia’s highlands, and they may have been the first coffee beans ever tasted! Arabica is most likely derived from the beans’ fame in 7th-century Arabia (present-day Yemen).
Arabica beans can have a variety of flavors depending on where they are cultivated, ranging from earthy Indonesian to floral Ethiopian. The majority of premium coffee manufacturers state that they use only Arabica beans. Why is this so? Arabica coffee beans are the highest-quality kind. They are well-known for their smooth, rich flavor and absence of bitterness.
Robusta (Coffea caniphora)
Robusta is the second most popular type of coffee bean. This bean was developed in Sub-Saharan Africa and is now mostly farmed in Africa and Indonesia. It’s also very popular in Vietnam, where it’s frequently added into coffee mixes. It is a less cost type, making it an excellent alternative for roasters on a budget.
Many people believe that Robusta coffee is harsher and more bitter than Arabica coffee. It frequently has a strong smell and a slightly flat, almost burnt flavor. Robusta beans contain far more caffeine than Arabica beans.
Liberica (Coffea liberica)
Coffea liberica is regarded for its pungent floral aroma and robust, smokey flavor profile. It is native to central and western Africa, notably Liberia, hence its name. This resilient variety is regularly blended with other types to add body and complexity, but it rarely gets credit for it.
Growing from a considerably larger plant than Arabica or Robusta, most Liberica cherries are uneven in shape and size, and resemble Robusta in general appearance. It is also resistant to hot, humid weather and thrives at low altitudes.
The bean, which is now primarily produced in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, accounts for around 2% of the world’s coffee supply. Over 95% percent of the Malaysian coffee yield is Liberica beans. However, it’s not commonly found in North American and European markets.
Liberica coffee has a controversial and polarizing reputation among fans due to its tremendous inconsistency. Those who have tried this unusual variety either adore it or despise it. Some coffee lovers like the unique, nutty, woody flavor and stealthy backbite towards the end.
Excelsa (Coffea liberica var. dewevrei)
Excelsa is the fourth primary type of coffee bean. Though it was formerly thought to be a distinct coffee species, scientists recently categorized it as a Liberica variety.
Excelsa beans have a distinct flavor profile. They combine light roast characteristics such as acidic notes and fruity aromas with qualities more reminiscent of dark roasts. They’re also lower in scent and caffeine, but with an extraordinary depth of flavor. Because they offer depth, these uncommon beans can sometimes be found in blends.
